Help Spencer in his recovery journey

Donation protected
Spencer Stone was involved in a bad car accident on October 9, 2025. He sustained multiple injuries including broken bones, a degloved lower right leg, ruptured spleen and a traumatic brain injury. While he is on the mend, TBIs take an extremely long time to recover from, expenses are mounting up. This GoFundMe is an appeal for help to cover some of those costs.

Fortunately, Spencer had health coverage so many of the direct medical costs have been and are being covered. But, co-pays and the cost of his parents (us) tending to his care and recovery are quite heavy. Spencer is about two hours away from home, getting great care from a sub-acute care facility, in Richmond, Virginia. We travel down to see him three times a week (Monday-Wednesday-Friday), spending the night on Fridays in order to see him an additional day on Saturday. From all we have learned, familiar voices, faces and touches help significantly to get things moving towards good cognitive recovery. Also, as good as his current care is, we have learned that it requires regular physical presence to properly advocate for a patient.

Your donations will help us to cover the current medical bills and the cost of care so far. It will also cover the costs involved to allow for us to continue to be present during Spencer's recovery, to keep ahead of the co-pays that come along, to cover some of his personal expenses while he is not working, and for accommodations and alterations to allow for Spencer's eventual return home. While we hope for significant recovery, we need to plan for a level of assisted living for him.

Recovery from brain injury is a painfully slow process. But we have seen steady improvement and we truly believe that a good outcome is within reach. Spencer's recovery journey is like walking a mile an inch at a time. He has gone from being on life support, to breathing on his own, and now is on the verge of having his tracheostomy removed. His broken bones (and there were many) have healed, the fantastic plastic surgeons reconstructed his leg and it has healed and is functional. He increasingly recognizes people and what is going on around him, and recently began communicating via eye blinks. We are moving towards recovery using baby steps.

We ask first and foremost that you keep Spencer in your thoughts and prayers (and we do believe in God and the power of prayer). We know that Spencer's recovery to this point owes much to the prayers and positive thoughts sent out from literally all over the world. We are gladdened and humbled by the amount of love shown towards our son and our family. However, with this GoFundMe we are also asking for your financial assistance and park our pride and embarrassment in doing so.

Thank you for supporting Spencer's recovery journey.

UPDATE:
Our goal of $50,000 remains but thanks to a number of direct donations we are able to lower the goal on GoFund Me.
Thank you to all that have donated. Spencer improves day by day and your support is helping to make that happen.
