Help Speedway Update Animal Holding Area
Tax deductible
My name is Anna Weber and I am the president of Speedway Animal Rescue. I am seeking $7,000 to cover the cost of materials to upgrade the Speedway Street Department's animal holding area, in partnership with the Town of Speedway. Our upgrades will include enhanced safety features, two additional kennels (5 kennels total), and top-of-the-line environmentally friendly materials. Speedway Animal Rescue is raising funds for the kennel materials, while the Town of Speedway is donating labor, as well as a recently upgraded roof and central air/heating system.
The town of Speedway has a unique public/private partnership with Speedway Animal Rescue. Our partnership is fundamental in keeping approximately 100 animals per year out of the overburdened, high-kill Indianapolis Animal Care Services shelter. In addition to caring for the stray animal population in Speedway, the Town of Speedway's holding area is used for housing animals in a variety of situations, such as during police investigations and in the event of an owner's death. This holding area is essential in helping Speedway residents find and reunite with their missing animals.
Per the town's ordinance, stray animals found within Speedway limits are held at the Speedway Street Department for 4 days. During that time, Speedway Animal Rescue is notified, and we immediately go to work to try and find the animal's owner. If no owner is found, we place the animal in a foster home. After the mandatory two week holding period, we provide vetting to the animal and place it up for adoption.
So far in 2023 the Speedway Street Department has had over 30 animals in their care. It is rare for the Speedway Street Department not to have an animal in their care.
An important upgrade we are seeking is to install a no-contact swivel feeding system to allow the town employees to safely feed animals in the case of aggression. As the stray animal population continues to grow, it is also important that we add 2 additional kennels to avoid running out of space.
We are so grateful to the hard work and dedication the Town of Speedway shows the animals, and these much-needed kennel upgrades will further help us in our mission to make sure every animal in Speedway has a home.
Any funds raised beyond $7,000 will be used to care for the animals taken in by Speedway Animal Rescue. We are asking for slightly over the $6718 estimate to account for fees. We cannot get this project off the ground until we raise the entirety of the funds, so we could use your help!
