Spartan is not just my family's dog. He is our bond, our center, my hiking companion, my stress reliever, my bed warming device, my security surveillance, and so much more.
He's a young Kelpie-German Shepherd mix, and from the moment he came into our lives he's woven himself into the rhythm of our home. He's there when we wake up. He follows us from room to room. He turns ordinary days into something warmer just by being present. He has his own personality, his own quirks, his own way of leaning his head on us when he wants to be close. He is loved, and he is depended on, not the other way around.
Today, that changed in an instant. Spartan met another dog in the wetlands and bonded with him almost instantly. In a flash moment he took off in one of his big zoomies, running through the wetlands, past my calls, and out of sight. Then came the sound no one wants to hear: a car pulling its brakes hard.
He's currently in emergency veterinary care in Victoria. The emergency team has stabilised him, but he now needs surgery on his paw to recover properly, surgery we can't put off without risking his long-term mobility.
Some context on where we're starting from: I'm a single parent, raising my two kids on my own while they're here as international students, and their visa processing has taken far longer than expected, which has meant a long stretch of tight finances. I've been cutting every non-essential expense just to keep us steady while we wait it out, so there was no cushion built up for an emergency like this.
The numbers, plainly: emergency care so far has cost $4,000, and the surgery he needs will cost approximately $8,000 more. We don't have pet insurance, and we've already used every credit option available to us. This isn't a lack of trying. We've been working every angle we can find, from payment plans to interest-free loan schemes, to cover as much of this ourselves as possible.
What we're short on is the rest, and that's why we're asking.
We're not asking anyone to help fund an abstract vet bill. We're asking for help giving a member of our family, one who has never once let us down, the chance to heal and come home the way he should.
Every donation helps, they will go towards the orthopaedic surgeon clinic. So every share, even from people who can't give right now. If you've ever loved a dog like this, you already understand what Spartan means to us.
Thank you, genuinely, for reading this far, and for anything you're able to do.
