I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in South Africa before Covid hit. I’ve been visiting for three months back in my same village helping my organization-Tlangelani Community Empowerment Centre.
They are the only provider of child and youth care services in a large rural village. They assist orphans and vulnerable children, and very poor families with children.
They just got news of a new educational requirement for their child and youth care workers. We have 9 women who do this work and only 2 meet the new educational requirement, which is a higher level of certification in child and youth care work.
Our workers make about $129 a month with their stipend that we are able to pay them. The cost of tuition for this training course is about $1000 per person.
I am asking each of my friends and family to donate at least $5. If you are able to donate more that would be wonderful. I am trying to raise enough funds to significantly reduce their cost for the training. If they don’t enroll, they will likely lose their job as they don’t meet the new educational requirement. Unemployment in South Africa is roughly 20%! In the rural areas it is even higher. Many women here are the sole breadwinner in their family.
Please help with whatever you can. Please also repost this on your personal Facebook page. Say something personal when you repost. If I can get 2300 people to give $5, we hit our goal!
I know all of these women personally. I am here now helping again and will be coming back in late November for three more months.
Our giving season is right around the corner. I appreciate anything you can do to help.
Thank you everyone!
