Help Sophie get a powered wheelchair
Donation protected
Sophie is one of a kind. She's caring, intelligent, creative, passionate and all round a truly beautiful person. However, Sophie has been suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia for about ten years since her early twenties and it's progressively gotten worse. She is also in the process of being diagnosed for postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). This essentially prevents her from standing up for long as her heart has to work incredibly hard to pump the blood around her body, counteracting against gravity due to the autonomic nervous system not working properly. You will always see her smiling, but, every day life is completely exhausting and she faces struggles that most of us will never experience or even have to consider.
Coupled with the pain and fatigue walking has become a major challenge for Sophie. Although she can walk, and some days are better than others, she now needs a wheelchair to minimise the fatigue and symptoms when standing. This will allow her to enjoy life outside instead of living from one seat to another. It will help massively to relieve the constant exhaustion and pain of standing and walking . Something most of us take as a given in life.
Unfortunately, Sophie recently had her driving license revoked on medical grounds. This has been devastating as it's taken away so much of her independence. She has been granted a bus pass council, but, even just getting to the bus stop is enough of a challenge in itself.
Sophie is training to be an occupational therapist and losing her mobility, both in her body and that provided by a car, is having a massive affect, to the point where the future of her attendance has been put into question. It's been a big challenge to get to this point in her course. She's doing amazingly well, will be a great therapist with so much to offer her future patients and she only has her final year to complete. She's so close to achieving her dream and having such a positive impact on the people around us.
The NHS has kindly provided a manual wheelchair, however, the arthritis in her hands makes it too painful for Sophie to be able to use it by herself. It's become quickly apparent that she needs a powered chair so she can get some of her independence back, however is not eligible for one on the NHS. This, unfortunately, comes at a cost that we simply can't afford. Asking for help is something that Sophie hates doing. She can be stubborn; I can get away with saying that, as her boyfriend, but, she is determined and does everything she can to make it by herself. Having said that, she does need help in this instance and anything you can do would be amazing.
The chair we are looking at comes in at £1,950 so any contribution big or small will help us get closer to achieving our goal.
Thank you for reading this and an even bigger thank you in advance if you can help. Even just sharing this or posting a message of support would be great.
