Sophia, my daughter, and her three children experienced a devastating fire in their apartment complex early Thursday morning. The fire started in the unit next to theirs, and unfortunately, neither their smoke detector nor the building's alarms activated. It was only because a neighbor was getting up for work at 5 a.m. and smelled smoke that the alarm was finally pulled. By that time, the fire had grown into a full-blown two-alarm emergency. The fire company and the Red Cross arrived quickly to help, but Sophia and her daughter had to stand outside in the cold for several hours while firefighters worked to put out the flames.

The aftermath has been overwhelming. There is significant smoke damage throughout the apartment, and all of their possessions have been affected. The fire company had to make holes in the walls and ceiling to ensure the fire was completely out, leaving the apartment unlivable. Right now, Sophia and her children have no idea when—or if—they will be able to return home.

Sophia is now searching for a new apartment to rent and must replace her damaged furniture. The funds raised will help her secure a safe place for her family and begin to rebuild what was lost.
