Help Us Relieve Sophia's Pain - Emergency Eye Surgery

Hi friends and family,

Our sweet fur baby, Sophia, a 15 year old Yorkie, lost her vision in both eyes a few years ago due to a genetic condition - but recently, her left eye became a source of serious and uncontrollable pain not only in her eye but her head as well. Her vet compares her pain to a migraine and we're now in the emergency stages of resolving this issue. The lens in that eye has shifted (a condition called anterior lens luxation), and now the pressure is dangerously high but with the type of luxation she has, we only have one option. She’s clearly uncomfortable—squinting, pawing at her face, not letting us pet her, showing signs of aggression (all signs of a pain response) and just not her usual self. It’s heartbreaking to watch.

We’ve tried anti-inflammatories, eye drops, glaucoma medication, multiple vet visits and rechecks, but her condition is not improving; nothing is bringing her relief. The most compassionate solution now is enucleation—removing the painful eye to stop the pressure and give her peace. The problem is, the initial exam with the veterinary opthalmologist, the surgery, overnight stay at the vet and medication she'll need after, costs over $3,500. Because of her age and her having a genetic eye problem years ago, pet insurance will not cover this surgery.

She’s a part of our family. Many of you know her, have been honored to watch her get the zoomies and shake her toys with all her might and watch her strong, sassy, fun loving personality shine. She’s been by our side through thick and thin for almost 16 years and she still gives us so much love despite everything she’s going through. We just want to give that love back in the best way we can—by ending her pain and giving her the quality of life she deserves.
