Hi! My name is Sophia Weber, and I am an 18-year-old senior at Wautoma High School. Recently, I received an invitation to attend a ten-day aviation academy in Colorado Springs during the summer. I was thrilled at the opportunity, as I am planning to pursue a career in the field of aerospace engineering (for those of you who do not know, that field of engineering revolves around aircraft, such as planes or different spacecraft). This academy offers an educational opportunity to learn some of the basics of aerospace engineering by having a few days to focus on designing and creating drones. This, along with other experiences such as having the opportunity to meet influential individuals in the field of aviation, is an amazing opportunity that a geeky kid like me is honored to have.
Now, to the part that definitely hindered my moment of excitement and led to the creation of this post. The cost of tuition, as well as the insurance to get the money back if something were to happen, is about $6,000. Adding in the costs of plane tickets, transport, and other expenses that may arise, brings the total cost to roughly $7,000. Understandably, this made me stop and think if this academy was really worth the cost. Currently, I am trying to save up to buy a new car (mines falling to literal pieces) as well as for college in the fall (I'm planning on going to UW Platteville for my undergrad in mechanical engineering) . This being considered, I still believe that this is an opportunity of a lifetime and definitely one I can't pass up. With completion of the program, I will receive two college credits and have my foot in the door to this field.
Back to the issue at hand, as a broke high school student who already works part-time, finding other ways to cover costs is a challenge. I spoke to a few friends and family members, and one of the ways they suggested was fundraising (and of course getting another job). So I decided an easy, non time consuming way would be to create this go fund me. Of course, I still plan on looking for another source of income as I want to be proactive and have a backup if all else fails. One of the side gigs I picked up was dog sitting for a few of my friends, which has proven to be something I enjoy (who doesn't love playing with puppies?).
Anyways to cut a long story short, I would greatly appreciate any help I may receive for this. I think it will be a very beneficial experience for my academics and a great way for me to grow as an individual. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and if you can't donate, that's alright, I understand times are kinda rough right now. If I were to be fortunate enough to receive more than what I need, I plan on splitting the extra total by putting half towards my college fund and donating the rest to the Waushara County Animal Shelter as a way to give back to my community. If you want to find out more information about this, I have attached the link below. Thanks again, and go Hornets!
