Help Sonny Fund the Fight Against Cancer

Donation protected
Within the last two weeks, our friend Sonny's life has changed with a sudden and totally unexpected cancer diagnosis. His treatment will begin right away with surgery followed by chemo. Fortunately, this type of cancer is very treatable for a young person like him.

While Sonny prepares for his surgery, tries his best to manage his pain, and plans to incorporate chemotherapy into his life, his friends have stepped up to help drive him to appointments, pick up meals, and take care of his cat, James. But on top of everything else, we all know this process comes with a huge financial burden, and he has already had to turn down one job offer due to his diagnosis.

While Sonny fights the cancer and the pain, we're asking that you join us in contributing financially to help him fight the medical bills.

Sonny's immediate medical expenses are:
  • First ER visit & CAT scan ($3,369)
  • First surgery ($4,700)
  • Chemo (estimated $1,916)
UPDATE: Additional funds raised above $10,000 will help Sonny cover rent and living expenses for a few months while he is out of work and recovering.

If you prefer, you can also send a check in the mail. Please write the check to Sonny Mehta, and address the envelope to Jake at:

For the moment, Sonny has rides, meals, and care for his cat James lined up. If you'd like to help in other ways, please reach out to Sonny in the coming weeks.

Here's what happened (shared with permission):
On Friday, May 13, Sonny went to Urgent Care with extreme stomach pain and got a CAT scan, showing a very large tumor (approx. 11x4x4") near his kidney. This tumor squeezed his kidney and ureter and deviated his aorta. He was in and out of the hospital for a few days, missing work in the critical last days of the campaign he was working on.

Subsequently, another ultrasound and further blood work revealed stage 2 testicular cancer which had metastasized and spread into his abdomen.

A multidisciplinary Tumor Board met earlier this week to determine what course of action to take. Their current plan (subject to change) is to do an initial surgery on Friday, May 27, followed by chemotherapy to weaken the larger tumor, and then finally conduct another surgery to fully remove it.

Sonny has been on pain medication to reduce a great deal of abdominal pain, but he is in good spirits and has come up with many bad puns to cleverly talk about his particularly sensitive diagnosis.

Thank you very much for any help you can provide!
