My sweet beagle, Sonny, is 7 years old and has been with me for 5 years. After having served 7 years in the army I have developed needs for having a service animal in my home so that I can live independently. Sonny isn’t just my family, he is my support system. The same way he has been there for me all of this time, it’s important that I can do everything I can to keep him healthy and happy as he enters his senior years, especially as we start this new battle.

Sonny was recently diagnosed with a rare presenting melanoma, and early heart disease. After discussing options with his veterinary team, we chose to avoid painful chemotherapy and instead pursue surgical removal of the tumor along with a melanoma vaccine trial through the University of Florida. Sonny has already undergone the surgery for removal, however full margins were not attained. This trial gives him the best chance at a longer, healthier life, but the cost of care is overwhelming — up to $7,500 in total. As a full time veterinary student, I am trying my best to keep up financially, however, I am ultimately on my own and the stress of this financial burden is weighing heavy.

I’m doing everything I can to make sure Sonny receives the medical care he needs. As a service animal, he deserves every chance he can get towards a long and healthy life.
