Help Sondos’ Family Rebuild Life

Donation protected
I am Sondos, mother of four children: Abdullah, aged 12; Lian, aged 10; Malak, aged 7; and Abdul Rahman, aged 3.

Before the onset of the war, my husband and I were striving to provide the best life for our children. After many years of hard work, we had finally purchased a car valued at $23,500. Thirteen years into our marriage, we owned our own car for the first time.

However, our joy was short-lived as the war in Gaza commenced on October 7th, plunging us into a tale of suffering, hunger, displacement, and the loss of our primary source of income over the ensuing months.

On October 13th, we were forced to flee to Khan Yunis for a week, cramming into one apartment with 20 family members. Yet, as the bombings escalated in the vicinity of Khan Yunis, we made the difficult decision to return to our home in Gaza. We remained holed up inside our house for approximately 15 days until the Israeli airstrikes intensified, prompting the Israeli army to issue an evacuation order for the area surrounding Al-Shifa Hospital, where we reside. We were then displaced to eastern Gaza, along with 22 of our relatives.

We endured a severe shortage of life's essentials, including food and water. Upon the withdrawal of the occupation forces from the area, we returned to our house, only to find it damaged by the bombings. The windows were shattered, doors torn off, and the scars of shells and bullets marred every corner. Despite the devastation, we cleaned and arranged it as best we could to make it habitable for our children. However, for another month, we grappled with scarcity. Food and water were scarce, and with flour in short supply, we resorted to grinding wheat and barley. Our children suffered, deprived of basic components of a healthy diet such as infant formula and eggs, resulting in alarming weight loss.

As the Israeli bombing intensified and the Shifa Hospital area was reoccupied on Monday, March 18th, we woke to the rumble of tanks surrounding our home. The army's loudspeaker instructed us to remain indoors under threat of dire consequences. For five harrowing days, we were trapped, with water and food dwindling and no means of escape.

The building we sheltered in bore the brunt of direct shell hits, while the agonizing sounds of neighboring homes engulfed in flames pierced the air as the Israeli army set them ablaze. On the fifth day of the siege, the army stormed our building, confiscating our communication devices, arresting the men, and coercing the women and children to move southward.

My husband endured arrest, torture, and humiliation at the hands of the occupation forces, subjected to degrading interrogations and forced nudity. After three agonizing days, they released him, instructing him to head southward. Two days following his release, our house, repository of cherished memories, was targeted, and our car was incinerated. In an instant, the occupation obliterated our dreams and all our possessions.

We are now desperate to leave Gaza, seeking to compensate our children for the hunger and deprivation they've endured. However, the exorbitant costs involved are beyond our means. With your assistance and support, I hope to secure a future for my children and provide them with a semblance of a decent life.
