Help Sonder Rent a Car and Save Their Stuff!

Breakdown:

$850: Storage Unit Past Due + March and April

$2000: $1500 covers car rental fees + $500 gas for a month

$1000: Food, fully restock uncovered medication, survival needs, Fundraising fees

My name is Sonder and I am a homeless, disabled QTPOC living in a womxns shelter in Seattle. Lupus(SLE) is the main stressor in my life. I am allergic to many of the pharmaceuticals used to treat Lupus, so I started making some very effective herbal medicine for myself 4 years ago. Despite working with doctors, a combination of herbal medicine and amino acid formulas are the only effective treatment. Since becoming homeless, I have not been able to afford supplies to restock the medicine I make or purchase the amino acid formulas. It would cost $1000 to stock me up on the necessary amino acids for 5 months and also get a start on the herbal medicine regimen my body needs. Part of the reason it’s taken so long to make a fundraiser is because I have been so sick without support and because I have been looking for other solutions. 


My most urgent concern is my storage unit. The majority of my belongings are still in storage and I have not been able to find any local programs that cover storage unit rent, despite a lot of effort. There’s a lien on my storage unit and Uhaul is threatening to start auctioning my things on March 2nd. It would cost $850 to pay my past due storage unit bill, the bill for March, and to cover April in advance. I need my belongings to stay safely in storage until I am able to find a place to live. The shelter I am residing in is well known for its issues with case management and staff harassment, factors that have greatly contributed to the length of my homelessness and the severity of my illness since my arrival. Now that I am taking things into my own hands, I expect to only need the unit until the end of April, max. In the event I cannot save the unit, I will use these funds to replace some of my belongings.

I am in desperate need of a car. With my immune system compromised by SLE and my mobility barriers, it is impossible to get to all my doctors appointments and meet all my travel needs without a car. I have a WA license and I drive very well. Unfortunately, I do not have the means to purchase my own car, tags, insurance, etc atm. I do not have the skill set to safely buy a cheap car without getting scammed, nor the transportation to check out options. It would be amazing if this GFM could connect me to car ownership, but for right now the practical option is renting a car for the month of March. My goal is to use the car to attend all of my doctors appointments, scout for an apartment, transport my belongings, and to access all of my needs safely. My van was stolen in 2019 and my quality of life has decreased exponentially since then. Access to a car would boost my quality of life exponentially. To rent a car for the month of April, I would need $2000, $1500 to cover car rental fees, and $500 for gas. In the event I can obtain gas cards, I can adjust that number! But they wont give me one until I get a car. Any extra funds in this are will go towards keeping the car for longer if I need too.
