Sonchō Karate Club is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company (CIC) providing inclusive karate training for children, young people, and adults across Cheltenham and Gloucester. Our focus extends far beyond sport — we use karate as a tool to support mental and physical wellbeing, build confidence, and resilience, particularly for young people.
We train barefoot, and safe flooring is essential to prevent slips, strains, and impact-related injuries. Proper tatami training mats would significantly improve safety and accessibility, especially for children and less experienced participants who are still developing coordination and confidence.
In addition to weekly classes, Sonchō Karate Club regularly organises regional training events, seminars, charity fundraisers, and grassroots competitions, bringing visitors and instructors into the area. These events support the local economy through the use of community venues, local cafés, shops, and accommodation, while also promoting positive activity and engagement.
Our aim is to raise funds to purchase tatami mats for both training venues so all members benefit equally from a safer training environment. This investment would support:
• Injury prevention and safe participation
• Youth engagement and confidence building
• Long-term physical activity and wellbeing
• Inclusive access to community sport
As a CIC, all funds raised are reinvested directly into the club and the local community. While we have applied for grant funding in recent years, we have not yet been successful, and are therefore seeking support through fundraising, sponsorship, or partnership opportunities.
Our funding goal is:
• £550 for one set of used tatami mats, or
• £1,300 for one set of new tatami mats that would serve the community for many years
Support for this project would directly contribute to safer community sport provision, youth development, and local engagement. We welcome conversations with councillors, sponsors, and organisations who share our commitment to supporting healthy, active communities.
Thank you for supporting Sonchō Karate Club and helping us keep our children and community training safely.
