My best friend Sofia is like a sister to me. We’ve shared the same birthday, countless memories, laughter, cross-country travels, and life’s milestones. Watching her world be turned upside down so suddenly has been heartbreaking.
Almost at the same time, both Sofia and her mother were diagnosed with cancer. Their diagnoses unfolded side by side. Her mother faced stage 4 bile duct cancer, while Sofia was suddenly facing her own life-altering diagnosis of breast cancer.
Sofia lost her mother this month, and the grief is unimaginable. She had hoped to care for her in every way possible, to be there through each moment, but her own illness and medical limitations made that impossible, a pain no daughter should ever have to carry.
Sofia was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, followed by the discovery that she carries the BRCA1 gene mutation. To protect her life, she has had to make urgent, life-altering decisions, including undergoing a double mastectomy. She now faces months of chemotherapy and long-term hormone-suppressing medications.
Because of her BRCA1 mutation, her treatment plan also includes preventive surgery, including the future removal of her ovaries to reduce her cancer risk. These are deeply personal, permanent decisions that affect her body, her hormones, and her future. Challenges she must face, while still grieving and processing the loss of her mother.
Sofia is also a newlywed, and one of the most painful parts of this diagnosis is how it affects her dream of having children. Before chemotherapy and preventive surgery can begin, she must undergo IVF and fertility preservation, a race against time that includes:
- Egg retrieval and freezing
- Embryo creation and genetic testing to ensure future generations do not have the BRCA mutation and more.
- IVF hormone medications and procedures
These procedures are medically necessary, yet largely not covered by insurance, adding immense financial stress to an already overwhelming emotional burden.
On top of medical and fertility expenses, everyday needs don’t stop. Sofia is not able to work during this time, and her husband has had to significantly reduce his hours to care for her. Proper nutrition is vital during cancer treatment, and she follows a strict vegan diet, which comes with higher grocery costs, especially while her body needs extra strength, care, and nourishment.
If you can donate, share, or simply hold her in your thoughts and prayers, it means more than words can express. Every contribution, message, and share is a reminder that she is loved, supported, and never alone on this journey.
Sincerely,
