Urgent Help Needed: Rebuild Lives After Hurricane Helene's Devastation
My name is Sofia Campins, and I’m from Asheville, North Carolina, known as Cherokee land ᏙᎩᏯᏍᏗ. At the end of September, Hurricane Helene devastated Asheville and its surrounding rural areas, leaving behind a trail of destruction. The storm took us all by surprise, and the aftermath has been catastrophic. Recovery is an uphill battle, and we are still struggling to get back on our feet.
My apartment was flooded, leading to my eviction and the loss of nearly half of my belongings. I’m now staying with friends in Atlanta, but I will soon need to find another place to live. All of my possessions are in storage, and with my phone broken until this week, I was unable to stay connected and manage the logistics of rebuilding my life. This broken phone made it nearly impossible to search for work, find housing, and stay in touch with the people who can help.
The rural areas surrounding Asheville were hit especially hard. Communities like Marshall, Chimney Rock, and the Blue Ridge areas were flooded with up to 40 feet of water. Fallen trees, landslides, and flooding have left these areas nearly impossible to access. My mother was stuck in one of these rural areas, completely immobile and without power or water.
I’ve also faced personal setbacks: my car broke down recently and I had to pay $5,000 for repairs. With no job and no clear timeline for when I can work again—especially after my workplace was washed away by the flood—I’m struggling to regain my footing.
I am urgently seeking $7,000 to cover basic living expenses and help me regain stability. Here’s how the funds will be used:
1. Housing: Securing stable housing to provide a safe place to live for me and my seven-year-old puppy.
2. Phone Replacement: Replacing the funds spent on my broken phone. This way I can search for jobs, stay connected, and manage my affairs.
3. Car Repairs: Recovering the $5,000 spent on car repairs, which was essential for mobility.
4. Living Expenses: Covering other immediate needs such as food, utilities, and transportation while I search for a new job.
5. Recovery Costs: Addressing additional costs incurred during and after the storm's aftermath.
Your help will give me the chance to survive this crisis and rebuild my life from the ground up. Every donation, no matter how small, makes a difference and provides a glimmer of hope in an otherwise bleak situation.
Please consider donating to my GoFundMe and sharing my story with others who might be able to help. Your support means more than I can put into words, and I am deeply grateful for any assistance you can provide during this incredibly challenging time.
Thank you for your kindness and generosity.
Thank you for your support,
