Sofia, a happy-go-lucky, chatty 10-year-old is in a fight against time. She was born at 34 weeks via emergency C-Section after suffering a stroke while in utero. She suffered a Grade 4 (the most severe) bleed in her brain IVH (intraventricular hemorrhage). Shortly thereafter, Sofia was diagnosed with Hydrocephalus (excess of cerebral fluid in the brain due to blood clots blocking normal flow). She endured 4 brain surgeries to place a shunt in her brain during the first six months of her life to control the Hydrocephalus. At approximately six months old she was diagnosed with left hemiparesis - spastic Cerebral Palsy (paralysis to the left side of her body). It is difficult for Sofia to use muscles on the left side of her body, making many daily tasks hard. In those early days, the odds were against her and no doctor could give her parents a prognosis - would she ever walk or talk?

In the past decade, her parents have dedicated their lives to finding the best local treatments for Sofia: Intensive Physical Therapies, Aquatic Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Vision Therapy, Hippotherapy, and Holistic Therapy. She worked hard on her many therapies and at the age of 2 years and 6 months, she took her first independent steps. Ongoing therapy helps her to maintain muscle strength, but Cerebral Palsy causes ongoing spasticity (muscle stiffness). This affects gait, causes pain and contributes to muscle contractures which can lead to bone deformities and premature aging. This is what Sofia is battling now as she approaches puberty. Her body will deform rapidly if there is no intervention. It has gotten so severe; her right foot is deformed and she is no longer able to tolerate her braces, which she wears daily to walk. Sofia has endured many treatments and surgical procedures to help rid her of the spasticity including botox injections, alcohol injections on her nerves and painful serial casting without any positive results. In the last 3 years, her right leg, her strong leg, started showing spasticity. She was recently diagnosed with Triplegia (which means both legs and left arm are affected by Cerebral Palsy). We wish we had more time, but time is fast undoing the gains she worked so hard to achieve.

Sofia has been evaluated and accepted as a candidate for life-changing surgery this coming July at St Louis Children's Hospital in Missouri for SDR surgery. Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) is an operation used to reduce or eliminate spasticity (muscle stiffness) permanently in some children with Cerebral Palsy. Nerve fibers running from the muscles to the spinal cord play a major role in maintaining typical muscle stiffness. SDR is a surgical procedure performed on these spinal nerve fibers to reduce levels of spasticity in the legs. Sofia will need intensive physical therapy for a year post-surgery. After she recovers, she will need corrective orthopedic surgery to reverse the deformity on her foot and ankle; and then more therapy.

Her parents have done their due diligence and found Dr. Park, a world leader in developing and refining selective dorsal rhizotomy. The St. Louis Hospital for Children in Missouri has more than 30 years of experience performing SDR to treat cerebral palsy spasticity. Dr. Park and his team have performed more than 4,500 surgeries on children and adults from 83 countries and have published more than 50 scientific articles on rhizotomy. This is a “once in a lifetime” procedure. Its effect is permanent and it cannot be reversed or corrected. After SDR and the one deformity correction, Sofia should not need to endure any more corrective orthopedic surgeries! Due to Sofia’s age, Dr. Park emphasized the urgency of the procedure. However, it is almost $40,000. The rehab therapy needed afterward will be an additional $40,000. We are hesitant to ask for help, but insurance will not cover the surgery or subsequent therapy. Sofía, una niña feliz de diez años está en una batalla contra el tiempo. Sofía nació a las 34 semanas de gestación con una cesárea de emergencia luego de haber sufrido un derrame cerebral en el útero. Sofía tuvo un derrame cerebral de grado IV que es el más severo. Poco tiempo después, fue diagnosticada con Hidrocefalia (exceso de fluido cerebral en el cerebro debido a los coágulos de sangre que bloquearon el paso normal). Sofía pasó por cuatro cirugías para poner un implante en el cerebro para mantener la hidrocefalia bajo control durante sus primeros seis meses de vida. Aproximadamente a los seis meses de edad, la diagnosticaron con Hemiparesia Izquierda - Parálisis Cerebral Espástica (parálisis del lado izquierdo de su cuerpo). Es muy difícil para Sofia usar su brazo y pierna izquierda, haciendo sus tareas diarias como caminar, vestirse, usar escaleras muy difícil. En esos días, las posibilidades estaban en su contra y los doctores no podían darnos un pronóstico, ¿podría algún día hablar o caminar?
