Help Socorro's Funeral Expenses

Donation protected
On Sunday, January 30th, my beloved friend who was like family to me, Socorro’s life was unexpectedly and tragically taken. On her way home from the grocery store where she was buying baking supplies to later share banana bread with her friends, she was suddenly struck by a driver running a red light, causing her instant death. Socorro had so much life left to be lived.

Socorro was a happy, vibrant, and resilient 70 year old. Even before beating breast cancer in 2018, she devoted her life to being healthy and living long for her 28 year old daughter, Angela. Socorro lost both of her parents by age 15, so it was important to her to be there for Angela as long as she could. Socorro frequently took walks in her neighborhood during the warmer months, with her daughter on the Chicago lakefront or Ping Tom Memorial Park, and just started exercising at the Lincoln Community Center in Highland this winter.

If you knew Socorro, even just through word of mouth, you know she is the kindest, most selfless, and soft spoken human to ever walk the earth. People who loved her had so many more years of memories to be made and time to be shared. Socorro was a mother-figure to so many. She provided guidance, a casual chat, a warm embrace, quiet company, and especially loved sharing home-cooked meals or baked goods with everyone she loved.

Socorro was a healthcare professional at Franciscan Hospitals in Chicago Heights and Olympia Fields for over 25 years until her 2020 retirement. Prior to this, she worked as a midwife in Saudi Arabia and as a child caretaker in California, where she immigrated from The Philippines in the late 80s. The better part of her career was spent working in the Pediatrics department as she loved children. Socorro had many younger family and friends with beautiful children and loved spending time with them as their honorary Lola (grandma), including my children. Her own daughter, Angela, was her pride and joy and reason for being. Socorro hoped to become a Lola to her own daughter’s children one day in the next few years.

She was robbed of the last phase of her life that she worked so tirelessly for: retirement, travel, rest, and extra time with loved ones. Her entire community is heartbroken and devastated at the untimely loss of our dearest Socorro.

Her only child, Angela, is seeking assistance in paying for funeral expenses to give her mother a beautiful send-off worthy of such an incredible, treasured person who touched everyone she met.
