Snowy, a sweet 2-year-old, 9-pound Chihuahua mix, came to Happily Furever After Rescue all the way from California, where she had struggled to find a forever home. After a month in a loving foster home in Connecticut, where she slowly began to trust and reveal her playful personality, Snowy was adopted on Thursday, May 8th. However, her adoption day took a tragic turn just 15 minutes after arriving at her new home.
Despite clear instructions to keep her leashed, Snowy's adopter removed her leash too soon, allowing her to slip out onto a fenced deck that had a missing rung. Still adjusting to her new surroundings and in the early stages of decompression, Snowy panicked and fled through the gap, disappearing into the unfamiliar streets of Poughkeepsie, NY.
For two long days, as temperatures dipped into the 40s and heavy rain fell, her foster family, the rescue team, and kind-hearted neighbors searched tirelessly. They hung fliers, shared her story online, and did everything they could to bring Snowy home. Tragically, on Saturday, May 10th, as her foster family arrived to search a new sighting area, Snowy was struck by a car on Vassar Road. The vehicle drove away, leaving Snowy lying motionless in the road.
Thankfully, two compassionate women who had been aiding the rescue in search efforts quickly stopped traffic, gently gathered Snowy's tiny, injured frame, and rushed her to Guardian Veterinary Hospital in Brewster, NY. Initial X-rays revealed a middle spine fracture, road rash, and multiple cuts around her face, but despite her traumatic ordeal, Snowy is holding on.
At just 2 years old, Snowy deserves a second chance. Happily Furever After Rescue has committed to giving her every opportunity to heal, including spinal alignment surgery, overnight hospital stays, CT scans, bloodwork, and ongoing care to assess the full extent of her injuries. This small, volunteer-run rescue needs your help to cover these unexpected and significant medical costs.
To everyone who shared Snowy's story, helped search for her, or sent prayers during those critical first days, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Now, we ask you once again to share, support, and donate if you can. Snowy has a long road to recovery, but with your help, we can give her the second chance she so desperately deserves.
Please share her story, spread the word, and consider donating to support Snowy's recovery. Every little bit helps.
Thank you for being part of Snowy's rescue story. ❤️
