Hi, I'm Ona Ludwig, a resident of Crestline, California. Along with residents of the extended San Bernardino Mountain Communities, we are snowed in from the recent "Storm of the Century." The situation has been declared a County, State and Federal State of Emergency.
It has been two weeks since 8 feet of snow immobilized our community, and many remain stranded in their homes on inaccessible mountain roads. From Valley of Enchantment to Big Bear, neighbors are helping each other and sharing limited resources.
Two of our three grocery stores have collapsed, and it may take a year to rebuild them. Water lines have broken in many homes; access to medication is interrupted; folks are running out of food for themselves and their animals.
Clearing the mass of snow is slow and requires special equipment which is currently being donated by local contractors. From what I've seen, local businesses and churches are working with Cal Fire, the Fire Department, and Sherrif's Department; however, we have yet to see the National Guard. Only a few civilians have been driven out, and it may be another two weeks before we can drive down the mountain again.
Everywhere neighbors are trying to help alleviate the suffering around them. There are a lot of heroes emerging from this disaster.
This fundraiser is intended to raise funds for a FREE STORE - a place where local donations can merge with bulk goods, bought when supply runs down the mountain can be managed.
A FREE STORE is a place where people can find what they need, and leave what they don't for someone else.
No one can go to work - resources are dwindling - people are ready to help - will you?
