Snoop was adopted from Lucky Dog Rescue in October 2015. She is a sweet and cuddly pup. Her favorite activities include chasing squirrels, eating treats, and cuddling. Together we have been on hikes and adventures all over the DC, Maryland and Virginia. Snoop has also traveled with me to Connecticut, New York, Florida, and Ohio.
On Tuesday, November 24, after two trips to the ER and many symptoms of severe back pain, Snoop was diagnosed with Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) which was causing disc(s) to press against her spinal cord. This was causing pain and a very sudden inability to walk normally.
After two weeks of crate rest and medical management and some slow and steady progress at home, Snoop's condition quickly deteriorated from stage 1 to stage 3 (out of 5).
On Tuesday, December 8 Snoop became unable to stand or take any steps on her own. She was quickly brought to the Bush Veterinary Neurology Services in Springfield, VA. She was kept overnight on an IV for hydration and to manage her pain. On Wednesday, December 9, Snoop was given an MRI which confirmed that Snoop had a ruptured disc in her spine. She went into surgery immediately following this diagnosis. Because of Snoop's rapidly deteriorating condition, surgery became the most viable option in order to give her the best chances of walking again and leading a pain-free life. The surgery will work to clean up any affected discs in Snoop's spine and allow her to start the process of healing and (hopefully!) walking again. The surgery gives her a 90% chance of walking independently, living pain free, and being able to urinate on her own.
Over the past five years, Snoop has been a loving pet and most loyal companion. Everyone who meets Snoop falls in love with her immediately. After a few initial barks when meeting someone new, Snoop makes very good friends with just about everyone she meets. She loves to run around the woods, chase squirrels, bark at doorbells, and lay around in the sunshine.
The funds raised will go directly to the costs of Snoop's medical care:
-ER visits, medication, and tests leading up to diagnosis: $720.45
-ER Hospitalization & Bloodwork: $1308
-MRI, Surgery, ICU Hospitalization: $9266.76
(updated to reflect the final bill following discharge)
(the total goal has been updated to include funds donated on other platforms like Venmo and Paypal)
After surgery and (hopeful!) full recovery, Snoop will be leading a modified lifestyle that will keep her spine healthy and safe from re-injury. Any additional funds will go directly to costs related to Snoop's continued healing and lifestyle modifications. This includes but is not limited to: a car seat (to keep her safe and secure in car rides), ramps for the house (these will be safer for her than navigating stairs on a regular basis which risks re-injury), and a dog carrier (so she can still enjoy long hikes, even if she cannot run around the woods herself).
Any funds you are able to give to this sweet girl and her recovery would be so appreciated. Though Snoop's exact age is unknown, she is estimated to be approximately 8 years old. This surgery would give her the chance to walk again and have many many many more years of a pain-free life. Getting more time with this pup and being able to give her a chance to walk again without pain would mean everything to me, as her loving dog mom. I know that this is a financially precarious time for many people due to COVID-19 and rampant unemployment, so only give if you can. But, if you do have the ability, any amount you are able to donate will be greatly appreciated.
I will keep this page readily updated with Snoop's progress as she continues her healing journey post-surgery.
Snoop, the week she was adopted (and before she got her first haircut!) in October 2015.
Snoop dressed up for a Zoom wedding during Covid.
Resting the day after her diagnosis.
One of Snoop's favorite spots to hang out is the steps outside the front door. She watches for squirrels, birds, and listens to the neighbor's garage door open and close so she can greet them.
Basking in the sunshine in the doorway of our home.
On a trip to Connecticut last spring.
Just enjoying more sunshine.
Hanging out on the couch at home.
Hiking near Frederick, Maryland.
More hiking photos, happy (and tired) once she reached the summit.
Snoop on "crate rest" last week with a heating pad to help with pain and inflammation of her back.
Trying so hard to get better and heal!!!
On her way to the hospital on Dec. 8, such a brave pup!
With her human who loves her more than words can express.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for considering donating and helping give Snoop the chance of a few more years of a quality life!! She means the world to me and I am so grateful for your support in helping her get back on her feet!!!
