Dear customers, friends, and fellow music lovers ❤️
We are Mika & Jessica, and we run Snickars Records, an independent vinyl record shop in Stockholm, Sweden.
Founded by DJ Mika Snickars in 1995, Snickars Records has become a well-known destination for DJs and record collectors from all over the world. We have always been passionate about supporting the local music scene and regularly host in-store DJ sets to bring people together through music.
Last year, around this time, we were planning to celebrate our 30th anniversary. Sadly, those plans had to be put on hold after a devastating accident changed everything.
What happened?
On October 20, 2025, our shop suffered severe water damage during renovation work on the building’s heating system. The system was flushed without first checking that all the pipes were properly connected and safe. One pipe in the wall had not been properly plumbed, causing dirty, black water to pour into our shop for several hours.
When we arrived, the floor was covered in black water, and more was still coming in. With the help of construction workers in the building, we eventually managed to stop the flow, but by then, the damage was already extensive.
We had to close both our physical shop and our Discogs store for almost two and a half months. During that time, we had to dispose of damaged records and furniture, clean and dry out the premises, and reorganise the entire shop. We carefully packed the records that survived into paper bags and moved them to dry storage to protect what we could save.
Throughout the closure, we still had to pay our rent as usual.
The financial impact
The total loss caused by the water damage and the closure has been approximately 850,000 SEK.
370,000 SEK in damaged vinyl records.
97,000 SEK in rent during the closure, when we couldn't operate the shop.
400,000 SEK in lost sales approx.
We are fully insured and submitted all the requested documentation to our insurance company, including photographs, damage estimates, and sales figures from previous years. Unfortunately, the claims process took 11 months to conclude, and the final payout was just 190,000 SEK.
The compensation fell far short of covering our losses, even though the damage was not caused by us.
To get through this difficult period, we had to use money we had set aside for taxes, along with some of our personal savings. Now, with taxes due and our finances under considerable pressure, we are facing a challenging situation.
Can you help us keep Snickars Records going?
Throughout this difficult time, friends have generously helped us get the shop back in order, and many of you, our customers, have reached out to ask whether there is anything you can do to help.
Your kindness has meant so much to us. That's why we are reaching out to our community.
If Snickars Records has ever brought you a favourite record, introduced you to new music, or simply been a place you love to visit, we would be incredibly grateful for a donation of any amount.
Every contribution, big or small, will help us get back on our feet and continue doing what we love. You can donate anonymously, and there is absolutely no pressure. We know times can be difficult for everyone.
If we receive more than we need to recover from this setback, we will invest the extra money back into the business — buying great record collections and hopefully releasing new music on our label.
Snickars Records has been part of Stockholm's music scene for more than 30 years, and we hope to keep it going for many more.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story, for all the support you have already shown us, and for helping us spread the word. Please feel free to share our story with anyone who might want to help.
With love and gratitude,
Mika & Jessica
Snickars Records, Stockholm ❤️
