Help Smoot Upgrade His Photography Gear
Donation protected
This is an entirely new experience for me, and honestly, I’m not even sure where to begin. If you’ve found your way here—whether through a shared link or by chance through social media—let’s start with an introduction.
My name is Ryan Smoot, though most people simply know me as “Smoot.” I appreciate you taking the time to read my story, and I’ll do my best to give you a clear and concise look into why I’ve created this GoFundMe campaign.
Who Am I?
I am a husband to my incredible wife, Angel (yes, that’s really her name!). We were married last April, and some may still consider us newlyweds. I’m also a proud #GirlDad to two amazing daughters, ages 12 and 13. Our family wouldn’t be complete without Red, the best dog in the world, whom I adopted two and a half years ago.
Professionally, I’ve been working in the corporate insurance industry since graduating college in 2008. But outside of my career, I’ve always had a deep passion for photography.
The Journey
My love for photography began in high school—back before smartphones made it so accessible! In college, I was that friend who always had a camera in hand, back when Facebook only allowed 30 photos per album.
Two years ago, I finally decided to invest real time and money into photography as a hobby. What started as casual photo shoots for family and friends quickly grew into something much more meaningful. Along the way, I’ve built incredible friendships with fellow photographers and creators who have helped shape my vision.
Initially, I thought my path would lead me to family portraits, senior photos, and weddings. However, as I immersed myself in the craft—following YouTube channels, engaging with photography communities, and learning from mentors—I discovered my true passion lies in nature photography, product photography, and videography. Now, I see an opportunity to carve out my own unique space in these fields.
The Why
As I began researching what it would take to transition into these areas professionally, it became clear that upgrading my equipment was essential. Currently, I use a Canon Rebel T7i, a fantastic entry-level camera that has served me well. However, to take the next step, I need a more advanced kit.
After consulting with trusted mentors, I’ve identified the camera body and lenses that would best suit my needs. Additionally, upgrading my editing and storage capabilities with a MacBook will allow me to maximize the potential of this new gear.
Beyond equipment, another crucial step in building a sustainable photography business is establishing it as a legal entity. I plan to register as an LLC, which comes with additional costs, including filing fees, legal documentation, and business registration expenses. This will allow me to operate professionally, protect my work, and open doors to larger opportunities.
Why GoFundMe?
Quality equipment and business setup costs are a significant investment. I explored various financing options, from personal loans to alternative funding methods. Then, I came across a story from a photographer I admire, who shared how he took a leap of faith by launching a GoFundMe to fund his upgrades. His journey inspired me, reminding me to trust in God’s provision and to lean on my community for support.
I want to be clear that I am personally investing in this goal as well. This campaign is not about asking others to fund my entire journey—it’s about inviting those who believe in my vision to join me in making it a reality. I have already committed my own resources toward this next step, and every contribution, big or small, helps me get closer to turning this dream into something tangible.
My Commitments to You
1. Transparency – Below, you’ll find a detailed breakdown of the equipment I’m purchasing, including links, costs, protection plans, and shipping fees. I am only asking for the exact amount needed—nothing more, nothing less. My goal will remain fixed, regardless of how many donations come in.
2. Involvement – I want to bring my supporters along for the journey. I will document this process, sharing the highs and lows of starting this new chapter in photography.
To everyone who has taken the time to read this and to those who choose to support me—whether through donations, encouragement, or simply sharing this campaign—I truly appreciate you. I’m excited to see how this unfolds and what God has in store for this new venture.
God bless, and as they said at the end of one of my favorite shows of all time: Love, Peace, and Souuuuuul!
