In June, I rescued a pregnant dog who soon gave birth to five puppies. Sadly, one was stillborn, but four survived. After about a week, I noticed one puppy, Smokey, had trouble using his legs. At just two weeks old, Smokey was diagnosed with Swimmers Syndrome—a condition that flattens the chest and makes it hard for puppies to use their legs. We started physical therapy right away, and I even tried taping his front legs together, which worked wonders. Within two weeks, Smokey was able to lift himself up and, for the first time, began to walk. Not only did he learn to walk, but his chest is now fully improved and no longer flat. At our follow-up, the specialist was amazed by his progress and encouraged us to keep going. Smokey soon learned to run by hopping with his back legs, but we realized something was still wrong. His back legs weren’t gaining full strength, and he struggled to control his bladder and bowels. Multiple vet visits and lots of hope led us to a neurology specialist, who confirmed that Smokey’s issues weren’t just from Swimmers Syndrome. He has a congenital spinal condition in his lower back, causing his back legs to move awkwardly and leaving him incontinent. Smokey now needs an MRI to pinpoint the problem and see if surgery can help. We love Smokey so very much and can’t bear the thought of him not improving and missing out on the best life possible. We have beaten a lot of odds together and can’t give up now! As he gets bigger and heavier, his condition becomes more prominent, so time is of the essence to correct this. These treatments are Smokey’s best chance at a happy, pain-free life. The funds raised will go directly toward his MRI, surgery if needed, and aftercare.
