My name is Andrea Nadeau and I am fundraising to help a small 3rd world hospital in the Amazon jungle in Peru that saved my husband, Ash’s life.
These funds will be presented to the hospital directly. Since Peru is not a supported country by go fund me I have a 3rd party who will collect and deliver the money! It will be left up to the hospital to choose what they spend it on, I do know they need the simplest things like an electrician to help with new wiring. It definitely will be money well spent and your donations will help save the locals lives, which in turn help save the Amazon. There are so many locals educating and advocating against deforestation and teaching locals alternative livelihoods.
Peru is not a supported country by Go Fund Me, so I have to fundraise in Canada and send the money to a good friend in the town who will present the funds to the hospital.
Heres our story. My husband and I were on an epic trip in Peru. One of our stays was deep in the Amazon jungle. We were with a group and we got to explore and help out in an animal sanctuary as well as a local Indigenous Village. The jungle is absolutely stunning. We got opportunities of a life time, meeting rescued wildlife, being invited to a local Indigenous Community and of course learning about the lush jungle.
Then the scariest day of my life happened. I woke up in the middle of the night to my husband acting strange. He had a very high fever and was sweating. We had a nurse with us who assisted. We helped to get his fever down with over the counter medication and cool compresses. He was doing much better. The fever was down and he decided to go to sleep.
One hour later, while sleeping, he woke up, told me he had to throw up and go to the bathroom. He looked grey, he stood up, took a step and collapsed. He fell face first into the floor. I screamed, I tried to pick him up but he was unconscious. People heard my screams and came to help. He was septic and his body was shutting down. In my mind I believed he was dying or possibly already dead.
There were no ambulances, no emergency services. Local community members heard the commotion and helped. He was rushed to the hospital in a truck.
We arrived at the hospital and the doctor immediately recognized the severity. Ash’s blood pressure was barely there. He was in a state most people do not recover from. It is by the Grace of God and the fast acting staff that saved his life.
This hospital was definitely 3rd world. It was open to the elements, had barely any staff, did not stock medicine, had stray dogs wondering the halls and had no life saving equipment. I did not even see a heart defibrillator. It was shocking to see. Any medicine Ash needed I had to walk to town to buy. It was a real eye opener.
He spent about 24 hours in this hospital and was then transferred to a hospital in Cusco. After tests it was discovered he had contracted a parasite either from, food, water or a cut on his finger he got from bamboo.
The hospital was dire but the staff was amazing. They did not have much but what they did have they freely gave to my husband. If it was not for the amazing community and hospital staff, Ash would not be alive today.
I really want to give back to this community. They welcomed us with open arms and I was shocked at what they had to depend on for medical care.
I am asking for help to give back to these people and their hospital. A small thank you for saving the life of my beloved husband!!!
The hospital is located in Pillcopata Peru.
