From Loss to Hope: Supporting Farmers Like Kuya in the Face of Climate Change.
Kuya woke up early as he did every day, the rising sun casting a soft orange glow over the vast fields of his farm in Mapri, a small village of San Pedro, Ivory Coast. His land was his pride, his livelihood, and his heritage. His father had worked the same soil, passed down from his grandfather, and now, it was Kuya’s turn. For years, his family had relied on the land to feed not only themselves but the entire village. But for the past few seasons, Kuya had been watching in despair as his crops slowly withered, unable to withstand the harsh changes in weather.
The rains, once reliable and predictable, had become erratic. Some years, the downpours were so heavy that the fields flooded, drowning his precious crops. Other years, the rain barely came at all, leaving the soil dry and cracked, the plants unable to survive the scorching heat. And every year, Kuya watched in horror as the seasons grew shorter, the temperatures rose, and the soil’s fertility seemed to decline with every passing day.

Kuya had spent all his savings on fertilizers, irrigation systems, and trying to improve the conditions on his land, but it felt like he was always one step behind. His once-thriving cocoa trees, which had brought his family prosperity, were now suffering from diseases that spread quickly in the unpredictable climate. His cassava crops, a staple for his family, had begun to fail. It was a battle he couldn’t win alone.
One day, as Kuya walked through his wilting fields, his heart heavy with the burden of another season of loss, he thought about his children. They had dreams—dreams of education, of a life beyond the farm, of a future where they didn’t have to struggle the way he had. But with each harvest failing, Kuya wondered if he would be able to give them that future. How could he support them if the land could no longer support him?

I first met Kuya a few years ago when I visited his farm in San Pedro, and since then, our bond has grown stronger. He is not just a farmer to me—he’s become a close friend, someone whose resilience in the face of adversity has inspired me more than words can say. Over countless conversations, Kuya shared his hopes, his struggles, and his dreams for his family. I’ve watched him work tirelessly on his land, always hopeful, always dedicated, even as his crops failed year after year. His determination to provide a better life for his children is something I deeply admire. Kuya’s story is personal to me because his challenges are not just his; they reflect the struggles of countless farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond. It is because of Kuya, and the countless farmers like him, that I’m committed to creating a solution that can offer real, lasting change.
Kuya’s story is all too common. Farmers across Ivory Coast and much of Sub-Saharan Africa are grappling with the devastating effects of climate change. In a region that relies heavily on agriculture, the unpredictable weather is a constant threat to survival. But Kuya doesn’t have to face this fight alone. What if there was a solution—one that could provide him with the knowledge, the tools, and the support he desperately needs?
Imagine a platform specifically designed to help farmers like Kuya adapt to these changing conditions. A Climate-Smart Agriculture platform that would provide reliable, real-time weather forecasts, allowing Kuya to plan his planting and harvest at the most opportune times. With the right information, he could avoid crop loss due to unpredictable rains or droughts. The platform could also help Kuya access advice on soil management, providing him with sustainable techniques to restore his soil’s fertility and improve water retention, something that has become crucial with the erratic rainfall.

More importantly, the platform would connect Kuya to a network of other farmers across Ivory Coast and beyond—farmers who are facing the same challenges and who have found innovative solutions. He could learn from their experiences, share tips, and access a wealth of resources that would otherwise be out of reach. This support network would create a sense of solidarity, a collective strength against the forces of nature that threaten their livelihoods.
But perhaps the most powerful feature of this platform would be its ability to offer farmers access to new crops and farming techniques that are resilient to climate change. For instance, it could provide Kuya with information about drought-resistant cocoa varieties or sustainable irrigation practices that reduce his dependency on expensive water sources. By giving farmers like Kuya the tools and knowledge to adapt, the platform would help them secure more stable incomes and ensure that their children have a future—one where they don’t have to leave the farm in search of a better life.
This is why we are raising funds to build such a platform. With your help, we can provide Kuya and countless other farmers across Sub-Saharan Africa with the resources they need to fight back against climate change and restore their livelihoods. By investing in this platform, you will not only be helping individual farmers but also supporting a broader movement toward sustainable agriculture across Africa.

Together, we can give farmers like Kuya the opportunity to thrive again. With the right tools, knowledge, and support, we can turn the tide on climate change, giving hope to communities that depend on the land. Your donation will directly fund the development of this platform, which will empower farmers to adapt, grow, and prosper in the face of an uncertain future.
Please join us in creating a brighter, more sustainable future for farmers like Kuya. Your contribution will be the first step toward building a world where farmers no longer have to watch helplessly as their crops wither, but instead have the knowledge and support to adapt to a changing climate.
