My fiancee was born to a low income family who struggled to put meals on the table. When her mother was pregnant with her, she was severely underweight for a pregnant woman and very malnourished. This lead to several birth defects. One of those is called congenital tracheal stenosis, a rare chronic condition (affects only 1/64,500 kids) that narrows her airways and makes it extremely hard for her to breathe. She has had this condition since she was born which made it hard for her to be fed and led to malnutrition. In her childhood, she would cough up phlegm and blood from running around and playing with other kids because she couldn’t breathe, which lead her to be depressed and play less. As she got older, it became worse and worse and affected PE classes, hobbies such as ballet, and daily activities such as climbing up stairs or even laughing. She was finally diagnosed with tracheal stenosis at 15 years old after years of misdiagnosed asthma and many unsuccessful inhalers. There are several treatment options for this condition, but all of them are invasive. In severe cases like hers, resection surgery is the recommended and most successful one. My fiancée moved to the United States as a teenager and is uninsured and surgery can be quite expensive as it’s a very rare condition that requires specific expertise. Her stenosis has now worsened to the point that her throat burns while singing. Shes always loved sports and songwriting/ singing and feels like the disease is slowly eating her hobbies and joy away.
