Three years ago, Sjohn Smith’s life changed forever. After a ruptured gallbladder led to sepsis, he was unable to fight off the infection and succumbed to it. But God had other plans—after 34 minutes, the medical team was able to resuscitate him. Although Sjohn returned to us, he suffered an anoxic brain injury and has required 24/7 care ever since. As his nurse and close friend, I have witnessed firsthand the daily challenges he faces and the strength he shows in the face of adversity.
Sjohn now spends his days in bed, flat on his back, because he simply doesn’t have the financial means for the equipment and care he needs. He dreams of being able to sit upright, walk, and receive the extensive therapy that could help him regain some independence. The funds raised here will allow Sjohn to purchase a reclining lift chair so he can rest comfortably and move from sitting to standing with less pain. They will also help him begin physical, occupational, speech, and neurological rehab services—giving him a real chance at a better quality of life.
Being a caregiver means fighting battles most people never see. You learn medical terms you never wanted to know, celebrate inches instead of miles, and hold hope on the days when it feels heavy. Sjohn has always had a genuine love for people, and before he got sick, he was always helping those less fortunate. I would love to see him out there again, instead of spending his days staring at his phone because he’s unable to move without help. Sjohn deserves the chance to heal with dignity—the right chair, the right therapy, the right support. If you feel moved to help, we would be deeply grateful for a donation of any size. If giving isn’t possible right now, sharing this campaign is just as powerful. We’re not asking for luxury, just the tools that make basic human comfort and rehabilitation possible. Thank you for standing with us.
