Sisay Belete and Selam Haymiro’s love story began at Semera University, where two students from different cultures -- Sisay from Salale, Oromia, and Selam from Gojjam, Amhara -- found connection despite language barriers and the divisions in their country. Their relationship became a beautiful symbol of unity in a polarized Ethiopia.

But today, life has pushed them into circumstances they can no longer carry alone. Sisay works full-time as a teacher, a job he loves dearly. But as many of you may know teachers in Ethiopia earn very little, and despite all his effort, his income is no longer enough to support their basic needs. Selam had to stop teaching to care full-time for her sick mother, leaving her with no steady income.

To survive, Selam turned to street vending, selling small items just to earn a few Birr each day. But even that has become increasingly difficult due to the current economic situations in the country. They struggle to afford food, rent, medication for Selam’s mother, and other basic living expenses.

What makes their story even more touching is that through all of this, Sisay and Selam remain hopeful, kind and united. They show us every day that kindness can survive hardship, and that unity can exist even in difficult times. Helping them means giving two good people the chance to stand again on their feet, to care for their family, and to rebuild the stability their lives have been missing.
