My name is Avishek Shrestha, and I am reaching out with a heavy heart and urgent need. My wife, Simran Tamang, has been diagnosed with a large carotid body tumor paraganglioma, a rare and dangerous tumor in her neck. This tumor is growing and, if left untreated, will become inoperable.

We do not have health coverage for this rare surgery in Canada, and the wait times here are extremely long. In the U.S., one of the most experienced specialists for paraganglioma (carotid body tumors) has confirmed that surgery is the only cure, but the estimated cost of $55,000 USD is far beyond our means. As international students in Canada, we do not have access to public healthcare for this treatment, and with the recent changes in spousal open work permit rules, we were unable to extend Simran’s visa, leaving us with no choice but to seek this urgent surgery in the U.S. This situation has placed a heavy emotional and financial burden on us, but we are holding onto hope that with your kindness and support, Simran can get the life-saving care she needs.
