Meet Jennifer and Tenaya…two healthcare professionals working for a non-profit in Kampala, Uganda. Living in Kampala means navigating some of the world’s busiest—and most dangerous—roads. Most people use motorcycles, or “bodas,” for transport. However, with a national average of 13-14 traffic-related deaths daily, we have decided that we will choose life and will not be using bodas. While more expensive, we prefer to keep our limbs and brains in full function.

Meet Simon…We met Simon during our first week of using a ride-share app to navigate through Kampala and immediately felt safe and comfortable with him. We appreciated having a consistent driver with whom we feel safe. He knows the shortcuts to avoid the endless traffic jams and he patiently waits for us while we buy our groceries or go to trivia night. Simon has alleviated the HUGE stressor of navigating this busy city and has proven to be trustworthy over the last 3 months.

Living in a rented car…Like so many Ugandans, Simon has faced many struggles in his life. He lives in his car because he cannot afford to pay rent with his low income. Because of this, he doesn’t sleep with a mosquito net, making him more susceptible to illnesses such as malaria, of which is he currently suffering. He rents a car to work as a driver and relies on his smart phone to take ride requests from local ride-share apps.

Before meeting us, he wasn’t reaching the weekly 200,000 Ugandan shillings (ugx) ($57) car-rental fee. He considers meeting us to be a blessing because we pay him around 200,000 ugx weekly, allowing him to pay his boss. Any additional income from the apps goes towards fuel, his meager meals, and support for his ex-wife and daughters (their rent and school fees). This month, Simon’s smart phone screen shattered beyond repair, and he cannot afford to get it fixed. As a result, he cannot work on the apps and his 3 girls have been removed from school due to un-paid fees.

How you can help…Our goal is to raise a total of $5,000.
This money will be used to purchase a used car in good condition and a smart phone for Simon. This will give him independence and stability, allow him to earn more through ride-share apps, and ensure safe and reliable transportation for us and others he drives.

Why Simon?...In a place like Kampala where there is extreme need everywhere you turn, it is difficult to choose how and whom to help. We believe we crossed paths with Simon for a purpose; some might even say it was divine intervention. We trust Simon and know that for him, this is more than a car—it’s an opportunity to grow his business, provide for his family, and have a bed to sleep in at night.

Thank you!!! If you’re able, please consider contributing and/or sharing this campaign with others who might want to support. Every amount brings us closer to giving Simon a sustainable future for him and his kids.

Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity,

— Jennifer & Tenaya
