Help Simi get to the Beijing 2022 Olympics

I’ve always dreamed of becoming an Olympian. 

My dream became so much bigger than me in 2018 when I made history by becoming the first African and Black woman to compete in skeleton at the Olympics. With my long, cornrowed Fulani braids, dark skin and full lips, I created a new vision of what a skeleton racer could look like. As I hurled myself headfirst down the PyeongChang Olympic ice track at 80 miles per hour, I broke down barriers that limited access for marginalized women. 

I was the first Nigerian Winter Olympian, but I won't be the last. The journey to Beijing 2022 is about changing the narrative of the game, the sport and those who are able to compete, regardless of race, gender expression and economic status. In Beijing, I'm forging a new path yet again by competing in monobob, a women's only, one-person bobsled event that debuts at the Beijing Games. The more visible I am, the more we can transform the narrative for women of color in sport.

In the last four years, I’ve primarily self-funded my dream to become a 2-time Olympian and represent a wider spectrum of humanity at the Winter Olympics. Funding my dream to compete in one of the most expensive Olympic sports isn’t an easy task. And with 6 months to go until Beijing, I won’t be able to get there without your help. That’s why I’ve created this GoFundMe campaign because I know it’s the key to creating the change we want to see. As I pave the way to Beijing, my ability to excel by having access to equipment, coaching and races around the world is greatly helped by your generous support. My goal is to raise $135K by September 12th for the start of Olympic season to cover some of the essentials.
