SilverSat (https://silversat.org/) is a youth-led 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to igniting a passion for space engineering and science among Silver Spring area tweens and teens.
SilverSat was founded in 2017 to serve students in the Montgomery County, Maryland area. We seek to help close the achievement gap by providing an affordable STEM enrichment and leadership development opportunity through a real-world engineering challenge - working with twenty students (evenly divided between girls and boys) to design and launch a CubeSat into Earth orbit through NASA’s CubeSat Launch Initiative.
SilverSat has seen significant successes in the time we have been in existence. During our recent review by senior NASA officials, SilverSat was called “a brilliant idea for capturing people's attention” that “could be leveraged for real-time world-wide notifications of astronomical events.”
We are proud to say that these teens are on to something.
The next phase is to submit a formal proposal to NASA. To be considered, we must be able to demonstrate that we can secure the $100,000 necessary to launch our CubeSat. To date we have raised $20,000. Clearly, more work is needed.
