My name is Silas Tooth, I am 17 years old and I am from Suffolk in the UK. I have been offered a fantastic opportunity to study at Pearson College UWC (United World Colleges) situated on Vancouver Island, Canada.
UWC Pearson is one of 18 colleges spread across five continents which use education as a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.
I will be living and learning with 200 other students of 100 different nationalities. Immersing myself among so many cultures will greatly enhance my understanding of the world. It will be a challenging two years: I will be studying the International Baccalaureate, which focuses on 6 core subjects and theory of knowledge, as well as an extensive programme of creative, active, and service activities in the local community, and a dissertation.
I have many interests including art, biology, the environment, politics, saxophone, skateboarding, wood/metalwork and theatre. Pearson College will nurture and support me to develop each of these passions while opening me up to a more international perspective on each topic.
Being home-schooled helped me become an independent and self-motivated learner, able to discover and develop my own interests and areas of learning. As I have matured I have developed a better understanding of and care for the world. Educating myself on conflicts and climate change I have discovered a growing ambition to promote peace and sustainability as a positive member of society. I know that UWC is perfect for me to fulfil this ambition.
In offering me a place, UWC's selection committee said: "You demonstrated that you clearly understand the opportunity that UWC offers, are enthusiastic about making the most of the two years at the college and are committed to having a positive impact on peace and sustainability in the future."
Pearson College was always my favourite of the UWCs, with its stunning setting on Vancouver Island, the incredible facilities and co-curricular options giving me the freedom and motivation to follow my passions. For example, I love astronomy, and on campus is the largest private telescope in Canada, so I will have the opportunity to pursue this growing interest.
UWC takes pride in not letting anyone's social economic background prevent them attending, and I have been offered a bursary to help fund my education at Pearson College. But even with this my family and I cannot afford to cover fully the remaining cost. So I am looking for sponsors to help me fulfil my dream to study there and become a leader for positive change in our world. Any amount, big or small, would mean so much to my family and I.
I am one of only 30 students from the whole of the UK to be nominated for a place at a UWC College. It is a very rigorous process and this was my second attempt. It really is a rare and challenging opportunity and I am determined to take up my place, so I can make that positive change in the world.
Thank you for your time and kindness, I hope you feel inspired to support me, and to share my story.
With love and thanks,
