With broken hearts and tears we can’t control, we share the devastating news that 11-year-old Siem Andemichael Kidane was found unresponsive in his bed this morning in Thunder Bay, Ontario and has tragically passed away.

There are no words to fully describe this pain. One day, Siem was here—laughing, talking, full of life—and the next day, he is gone. His family is in complete shock, struggling to even breathe through the grief. No parent is ever prepared to see their child like this, and no family is ever ready for this kind of tragedy.

Siem was not just a child; he was the heart of his family. He was loving, gentle, very social, and well mannered. He loved to interact with others, make friends, and bring joy into every room. He had a warm smile and a kind spirit that touched everyone who met him. To lose such a beautiful soul so suddenly, at only 11 years old, is beyond heartbreaking.

Siem’s family is originally from Eritrea. They came to Canada as refugees in 2019, hoping for safety, peace, and a better future for their children. They worked hard to build a new life from nothing, in a new country, with a new language and system. Like many refugee families, they have faced many challenges but always tried to stay strong and hopeful.

This tragedy has hit them in the most painful way a family can experience. On top of the unbearable emotional pain, they are now facing the heavy financial burden of funeral and burial costs that they simply cannot afford. As refugees and newcomers, they do not have savings, insurance, or financial support to cover such unexpected expenses.

In this moment of deep sorrow, we are turning to our community and to anyone who sees this, asking for compassion and help.

Funeral and burial costs for Siem, Religious and cultural services to say goodbye in a proper and respectful way, Basic support for the family as they grieve and are unable to work or function normally during this time.
