Rhabdomyosarcoma is a word the Patterson family learned on October 17th. Sid had a 3 cm tumor removed on October 12th that turned out to be Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma cancer. The plan was to wait and share with our community once they had staging but with thanksgiving this week the Patterson’s really have reflected about the one thing they’re most grateful for and it’s the amazing individuals and families that have been a part of their lives. Through every stage there have been important people in Sid and their lives that made them want to share about our journey because they have been trusted and loved members of their tribe.

Sid is currently recovering from surgery at the hospital in which they removed 15 lymph nodes in the direct drainage area related to the tumor. Pathology will see if they have any of the cancer cells and will have the results in 5-7 days. Prior to surgery he had a PET, MRI, and two CT scans. The PET and MRI showed nothing strange. However, the CT found a 4 mm (think the size of a pencil eraser) node in his right lung and he will be having surgery on the 30th to remove it so the pathologist can see if it is cancer or not. They have to do this to complete the staging process which will then create the map for treatment based on protocols by the Children’s Oncology Group.

No matter the stage of this cancer, he will be starting chemotherapy in December because of the aggressive nature of Rhabdo and to terminate any microcells that might be in there waiting to try and take over. The battle is just starting and this monster has no idea who it’s messing with!
