Shine Fitzner's Memorial Fund
Donation protected
At the beginning of 2021, shortly after she moved to Maui, Shine went to the hospital with severe pain. She found out she had a large tumor, and was going to be flown to see a specialist on Oahu. She never made it there. After leaving the hospital, while home alone, she suffered a massive stroke. It’s left her paralyzed on her right side, with expressive aphasia. Since then, the tumor has been diagnosed as ovarian cancer. Since this tragic episode began she has been separated from family and friends, isolated in a hospital that is restricted to visitors because of Covid. She is facing extraordinary challenges alone.
She has a long road to recovery ahead of her, and can use all the love, encouragement and financial help from friends and colleagues that she can get. She will be in Hospice Maui & Palliative Care, trying to build up her strength so that she can receive chemo treatments. The critically important funds we collect here will be used to help pay for her insurance, her medical bills, and for additional support to keep her fighting.
UPDATE: (2/26) Unfortunately, in the last couple days Shine has shown significant decline. The doctor does not believe she has much time left. I am still holding out hope for the toughest gal that I know--but it is not looking very promising. I cannot imagine a world without her.
Because of this change in status, the goal of this fundraiser is also changing. Funds will be used for her comfort, as long as she's with us, any outstanding expenses relating to her care, and to honor her memory: a celebration of her life, as well as memorials in her four favorite places—Bolinas, Santa Fe, Maui, and NZ. If there is still money remaining it will be donated towards ovarian cancer and stroke recovery research. Since many of you donated when our goal was more hopeful, you can message me if you'd like funds refunded.
UPDATE: (2/27) I am so sorry to share this news, but Shine passed at approximately 2am Hawaiian time this morning. Her light will be greatly missed, and always remembered.

Shine is someone who has touched so many people, all over the world. Many know her from her years dedicated to crafting visual effects on films at companies such as ILM, Weta and others. She is a great friend, an amazing artist, adventurer, and one-of-a-kind warrior woman. Any donation will be greatly appreciated, as will your thoughts and prayers. Her contact info is listed below--you can send cards and packages as well. Thank you!

About the fundraiser, Meghan Thornton from San Francisco, CA: I've known Shine since 2004, when we met in Sydney and worked on Happy Feet together at Animal Logic. Since then we've always been in touch, even when apart. I love her a whole bunch.
