Help Sherpa Guides & Porters During Lockdown

Donation protected
This Autumn season in Nepal I had all of my tour groups cancel due to the Coronavirus pandemic and lockdown. Over the last six months I, as well as other guides and porters who I regularly hire for treks, have not had any work and have not been able to earn our normal living.

Each trekking season I regularly hire 24 Sherpa guides and porters who each need approximately $250US  per month for basics such as food, housing, water and other necessities of life for their families.

Normally what we earn during the two trekking seasons, Spring and Autumn, are enough to tide us through the whole year. We understand the lockdown is important for the health and safety of everyone and that is has been going for over 80 days. The government lockdown has broken the backbone of our economic condition. During this lockdown, one of my  German friends and I did distribute some food to my sherpa guides and porters. But he can not financially continue to support all of us.

I have run out of my savings and am taking loans to tide us through this difficult period. Also, I have to look out for my family and I am the only person who earns money in my family. I am very worried about my Sherpa guides and porters who have a very difficult situation in this crisis.

If you can please help with any amount to help my guides and porters and their families, it would be deeply appreciated. All money raised on this page will go directly to help each of the 24 families I work with.

Thank you for supporting us.

Hello, my name is Peter Carey and I am helping my friend and guide Kami Sherpa organize this GoFundMe campaign. Kami contacted me in August about the dire need his family, and others who he regularly employs, currently face and I agreed to set up this page and forward all funds raised so he can distribute them in Nepal.

While Nepal recently lifted their travel restrictions, the country does not have the virus under control and is currently experiencing a rise in cases and deaths, as in many countries around the world. They also have inadequate testing and tracing which is keeping away the vast majority of tourists this Fall trekking season (which runs from late September through November)

This page is attempting to partially alleviate the lost wages of those Kami regularly hires. Trekking, and the business it generates, is the backbone of those who live in the Himalayas and there are few, if any, other options for income.

The funds raised will help these families struggle through the Fall trekking season with practically zero outside visitors coming to trek. My goal is to offer photography trekking tours in Nepal for the Fall 2021 season, pandemic permitting, to bring Kami and his group much needed business.

To say this group of wonderful guides and porters would rather be working than asking for assistance is a severe understatement. They love sharing the beauty and majesty of the Himalayas, their home, with those who visit.

More information about future photo tours to Nepal can be found  HERE .

Thank you for your consideration and support.
