My name is Sheri Helms, and I am living with a rare and complex bone and muscle tissue disorder called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. Over the years, I have endured more than 40 major surgeries, each one a testament to my determination to keep fighting. Now, I am facing my most urgent challenge yet. My arm has been broken for four years, and I have developed a severe bone infection called osteomyelitis. This infection is threatening my life, putting me at high risk for sepsis, and my doctors have told me that without two more major surgeries, my future is uncertain.

Living in Michigan, I have sought help from the top specialists at local universities, but my case is so complex that I have had to travel to Cleveland, Ohio, to receive care at the Cleveland Clinic. The journey is three and a half hours each way, and my only vehicle is a 2003 Envoy with over 300,000 miles that desperately needs repairs to be safe and reliable. As someone who is disabled and living on a fixed income, the costs of medical care, travel, rent, utilities, and food have become overwhelming.
