Poor Shelly can't catch a break. For those that don't know Shelly, she is a vital part of saving the lives of thousands of dogs at the Kentucky Impounds. For years she has worked tirelessly to find rescues willing to take the dogs and find local fosters to care for the dogs until transport can be arranged. Sometimes the rescues drive down to get them, but often Shelly loads a van full of dogs and transports them herself. Shelly injured her knee July 9th and missed months of work. Then this week a dog blindsided her and knocked her to the ground, severely injuring the knee that was finally starting to heal. She will again have to have surgery and is facing missing at least 3 more months of work. On top of that she has all her medical bills.
Here is what happened, in Shelly's words.
July 9th I was loading the transport van.
I stepped up with a crate and heard tear, tear, pop. Then I fell out of van and crate came down on me.
I had a fractured Tibia blown Acl and torn meniscus.
I had to do 2 months of rehab to let Tibia heal then they did did surgery Sept 8th. They replaced my ACL and Meniscus.
I was off work an additional 2 months and doing rehab.
The first month I was in a brace from top of thigh to ankle locked straight.
I was finally back to work 4 hour days.
I was at work and had forgot my smock in car. I was walking in parking lot to my car with my Brace on. A chocolate lab came charging full force at me straight into my knee. I went up in air and down on concrete.
I was screaming for help because I couldn't move my leg.
The owner of the dog came running and went inside salon telling them I needed help.
They called a ambulance and they took me to hospital.
I was in excruciating pain and after xrays was told I had a broken Tibia plateau.
They put me in a knee immobilizer and I went and saw my ortho. They sent me for a CT scan and today I got the news that I have several breaks and will need plates and pins to hold my Tibia and knee.
I will once again b locked in a brace from thigh to ankle for 6 weeks. Then will slowly start PT.
I am looking at a minimum of 3 months non weight bearing. No work.
