Our sister, Shelly (Kliese) Mantz, has been fighting to survive liver failure since November 30, 2020 when she collapsed in her home. The goal of this GoFundMe is to help her cover medical and living expenses as she heals from the effects of liver disease and pancreatitis and then goes on to receive a liver transplant. Shelly is also going through the very recent death of her husband, Mike. Please read her story and consider helping her through donation.
On November 30, 2020, Shelly was taken to the ER and then was transferred in critical condition to the Transplant ICU. It was determined that she is in need of a liver transplant, but she also has pancreatitis and cannot be considered for a transplant until her pancreas heals. She was told that her liver will survive for only 90 days but the pancreas will take 6-12 months to heal. She started out in critical condition and there were many scary, sad days where we feared the worst for her. But gradually, she began making improvements. After spending almost 3 months in the hospital, she was finally discharged on February 25, 2021.
As planned, Shelly went to stay with our parents while she began the long process of recovery, since their house has less stairs for her to deal with. Within 30 minutes of arriving at their house, she received a call from her father-in-law that her husband, Mike, had unexpectedly passed away from natural causes. It's hard to imagine what it's like to go through the health battles that she has ahead of her. It's even harder to fathom going through them while facing the devastating loss of a spouse.
Shelly has been very emotionally strong in coping with the loss of Mike. But she also is very determined to get physically strong. She has been working hard to do what she can to overcome her health challenges. She goes to dialysis 3 times a week, has physical therapy once a week and goes to all her different follow up doctor appointments. She wants to get back to work but it is going to be a while before she is healthy and strong enough to get back to her job.
Shelly has a long road ahead of her, including continued healing for her pancreas and the balancing act of trying to keep everything stable until she can be placed on the waiting list for a transplant. Then, we hope, she will be able to receive a transplant and go on to recover beautifully from that.
While she is unable to work, we hope to try to bridge the gap for her, financially. She faces medical expenses and COBRA insurance payments, along with regular living expenses, such as her house payment and utilities. With Shelly's fragile medical condition, it's hard to find many tangible ways to help her right now so we want to try to ease the financial burden for her, if we can. We would love to be able to raise enough to cover her current expenses for at least six months.
This GoFundMe has been set up by Shelly's sisters, Becky (Kliese) LaCasse and Jenny Kliese, to help her as she recovers and grieves. We love our sister dearly and we are hurting for her that she is going through this battle. We believe that it is miraculous that she has survived such a dire prognosis and we just want to help her get back on her feet again! We want to take away some of the financial burden and provide hope and healing for her. Thank you so much for considering helping and supporting her through prayer and donations to her GoFundMe!
