Hi my name is Sheldon Kiser. On April 11, 2021 while inspecting a roof for repairs I fell approximately 20-25 feet landing on my back. The pain was excruciating. I was life flighted to Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. I don’t remember much about the fall, the flight or the first week or so thereafter. I broke my left scapula, several ribs on the right side and crushed my T12. After several days and several scans and tests the doctors determined that the fall left me paralyzed from my waist down and that my injury is complete, meaning that there is no chance for me to walk again. After a week in Presbyterian I was transferred to the Center for Spinal Cord Injuries at UPMC Mercy in Pittsburgh where I spent 5 weeks learning to do simple everyday tasks such as getting dressed and taking a shower. Everyday routines that used to take only a few minutes before my fall now can take up to an hour sometimes for me to complete. Things that I used to do on my own have now left me depending on someone to help me achieve. Over the past 10 months things have been difficult both physically and financially. I am a carpenter by trade and because of my injuries I am no longer able to work at my trade. I have tens of thousands of dollars of medical expenses not covered by insurance. I am trying to keep my mortgage paid but I am also in need of upgrades to accommodate my disability and for my safety. I need bars installed in the shower, my floors are uneven and I need some outside work done so that I can get from the house to the car in order to get to my doctor appointments just to name a few. I never dreamed that this would happen to me at 52 yrs of age. I am still having a difficult time accepting that I will never walk again. It has taken me the past 10 months to put into perspective how big of a financial burden this fall has caused me. All of my life I have been the guy who would give anyone a helping hand and donate time and money to help out family, friends and neighbors never to expect to have to ask the same in return. May God Bless anyone who is able to help me in this time of need. Thank you in advance.
