Scott is a coworker of ours, who works very hard to take care of his family (6 kids). This is what has happened to his daughter.

Shelby’s Story

Scott and Theresa’s 12-year-old daughter has had quite the unfortunate journey the last 2 weeks. Shelby got sick the morning after her first day of 7th grade. Despite Scott and the first ER doctor and nurse having the intuition that something was wrong, they were told it was just mesenteric adenitis. It took 2 ER visits, 2 sets of labs, 2 ultrasounds, a CT, swabs for strep, mono, and COVID before the doctors finally listened to the plea to rerun the scans and decided to do a 3rd ultrasound. That’s when they finally realized she did have appendicitis.

So then surgery was scheduled for the next morning, Sunday the 6th.

Surgery went well. They found out she had 2 perforations and would need at least 3 days on antibiotics.

She didn’t improve as well as they would have hoped. She wasn’t eating or drinking, developed HBP, a heart murmur, was still throwing up off and on, and still having low-grade fevers. She was also put on PPN. A week out from surgery, they did another ultrasound and found out she had developed an abscess. So then she was transferred out to Minneapolis Children’s via ambulance.

Needless to say, her journey didn’t fully end until almost a week later.

She had to have her abscess drained, a drain tube put in, as well as a PICC line. 4 more days of antibiotics, 2 more days of IV nutrition, labs drawn daily.

2 weeks she spent in the hospital. 2 different ER trips, 3 different hospitals, 3 ultrasounds, 1 CT scan, multiple labs, 6 IVs, appendectomy, drain tube put in for an abscess, PICC line, 5 days of IV nutrition, 4 shots of hyaluronidase.

Shelby’s mom stayed in the hospital the whole time, missing 2 weeks of work, and Scott missing 2 weeks of work to take care of their other kids.
