Help Shelby & Garret Rebuild After a Storm Destroyed Their Home
Hi, my name is Debbie Hack, and I’m reaching out on behalf of my daughter, Shelby, and son-in-law, Garret. Just a few days ago, a devastating storm turned their world upside down.
On June 17th, during a storm with heavy wind, rain, and a suspected tornado, a huge tree crashed onto their home in Nowata, Oklahoma. The damage is heartbreaking. They had only been in the home for 4 months. This was the home they’d poured over a year and a half of blood, sweats and tears into. Now it’s unlivable.
By the grace of God, they’re physically okay. They were just six feet away when the tree came down. We truly believe God’s hand of protection was with them that night—and we trust He’s not finished writing this story.
Unfortunately, they hadn’t been able to set up their home insurance yet. That reality makes their road to recovery even tougher.
Right now, they’re staying with us—six people and more than a handful of dogs under one roof. It’s definitely a full house and temporary.
Only a week before the storm, Shelby and Garret welcomed a 14-year-old foster kiddo into their home. He’s brought so much joy and laughter, and despite all they’ve lost, their commitment to giving him love and stability hasn’t wavered once.
As a mom, it’s gut-wrenching to see your child standing in the rubble of her dreams, with nothing you can do to fix it. So I’m doing the one thing I can - I’m asking for help.
We’re hoping to raise $30,000. It’s a number that feels overwhelming to share and truly it’s not enough but it will absolutely help them get on the right track. I know it seems like a lot but it unfortunately reflects the real cost of rebuilding—from finding a safe place to live, to replacing everyday necessities like clothes and kitchen tools, to creating a stable and nurturing space again so they can welcome other foster children into their home.
I know times are hard for so many. But if you’re able to give whether that’s a donation, a prayer, or simply sharing this with as many as you can — please know it means the world to us.
Thank you for loving them through this. Thank you for showing up. We couldn’t be more grateful.
With love and hope,
Debbie Hack
