Shelby and her 18-year-old son, James, are facing an incredibly difficult time after James was involved in a serious car accident as a passenger. James, a junior in high school, suffered a traumatic C1/C2 neck injury and is now in a neck brace, facing a long and uncertain recovery.

In addition to his neck injury, James sustained a severe concussion with mild bleeding on the brain, a laceration to his head, and multiple broken ribs on his right side (2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th). His ribs came dangerously close to puncturing his lung. At this time, he is unable to walk without assistance for more than a few feet, and his right side is showing delayed response, adding to the challenges of his recovery.

The accident also completely totaled and flipped his car—his very first car, which he had worked hard to help pay for after receiving it as a birthday gift. This has been another heartbreaking loss during an already overwhelming time.

Shelby has been a single mother to James for most of his life and is the sole provider for their household. Over the past three years, she has been working full-time while also building and finishing a home for the two of them on her own. Unfortunately, the home is not yet fully equipped for James’s current needs. Their bathroom is still unfinished and does not yet have a shower or tub, making basic care extremely difficult even with the medical equipment he has been given. In addition, their home will require ramps or at least handrails installed so that James can safely enter and leave the house.

As James recovers, Shelby will need to take time away from work to care for him, creating immediate financial strain alongside mounting medical bills, home modifications, and daily living expenses.
