Help Shaya Get Back on Track
Hello!
My name is Shaya Ishaq and I am an artist, designer, and student.
I was recently alerted about a debt that has accumulated interest which has put me in a financial crisis. I am hoping that community assistance can help me out of this scary situation.
In the fall of 2018, I decided to go back to school to complete my BFA in Montreal where I am attending Concordia University. This semester I was unable to pay my tuition on time and didn’t realize what had accrued in the following weeks. By the end of this month will be $1000 - an amount that I cannot pay on my own at this moment and that adds to existing expenses. In addition to the debt, I am hoping to raise money to ensure that my living expenses are secured until the end of the semester:
$1000 for the late fee
$750 two months rent
$250 food + misc living expenses
I would deeply appreciate any support you can offer, be it financial or moral.
As an artist and designer I work with textiles and ceramics to create wearable art, and jewellery. Beyond wearable work, I create furniture, objects, and spaces. With projects such as Black Libraries Matter: Collective Calls to Liberation and my set design for DIY Spring’s 2018 music festival, I am constantly envisioning how my work can live at the junction of community engagement and creative practice.
I'm including a link to an online shop I have started featuring recent work I made this summer during a residency at the Nova Scotia Centre for Craft and Design. All and any help is appreciated including signal boosting for my work.
As a young Black creative trying to pave this way for myself both in and outside of institutions for the last few years I am so fortunate for the kind people who have given me any chance to share my work, grow, and learn. The generosity and kindness I’ve received is something I do not take for granted. My back feels like it’s against a wall, but I am leaning into a support system that I trust.
Thank you so much in advance for whatever you can offer.
