Shawn and I have been friends since high school, and his family has always been there for me and so many others in our community. After I dropped out of college and had nowhere to go, Shawn’s family immediately took me in, gave me food, and helped me get stable employment—a job I still have today, more than 20 years later. They’re the kind of people who would pick up all the kids in the neighborhood and drop them off at home after football practice, always going out of their way to help others. If someone needed a meal or a place to stay, they never hesitated to open their doors.

Now, Shawn and his family are facing hard times. As they’ve gotten older, medical problems have caused his mom to become disabled and immobile, and Shawn himself has struggled with his own health issues. About nine months ago, their apartment asked them to leave after renting to them for over 30 years, due to major renovations. With money running tight and Shawn’s car breaking down, I’m deeply worried that they could end up on the street. Despite everything, Shawn continues to help others whenever he can, but right now, they need our support.
