The lives of the Mains family changed in March when Shawn suffered a significant stroke. Turns out he had two strokes(!), and lost 100% use of his right (dominant) arm and hand, and 50% use of his right leg. His speech and swallowing was adversely affected but he has worked hard to get most of it back! With rehab Shawn has gained the ability to walk short distances with a cane and a helper, and is otherwise wheelchair bound. The great news is that he is home, and on the road to a long recovery. The bad news is, Shawn will very likely always require care. The family has been informed that after some weeks of home care rehab, Shawn will not qualify for additional support of an aide due to much red tape in the system. Shawn also had to resign his job indefinitely, and Athena is burdened with working extra to help make up the difference. She works full time besides, and is his primary caregiver all at once which is a lot, even for the nurse she is! Some financial help could go a long way to ease the burden of Athena having to work extra, as well as paying for a home health aide in the future months as needed.
