Helping Shawn Heal After Life-Saving Transplants

Sometimes life changes in a single moment—and nothing prepares you for how much courage it takes to rebuild afterward.

My husband, Shawn, has undergone both a heart transplant (11-22-24) and a kidney transplant (6-13-25). These surgeries saved his life, and for that we are deeply grateful. The road after transplant, however, is long and complex, requiring ongoing care, medications, and support well beyond the Vanderbilt hospital walls.

This season has been filled with fear, exhaustion, and uncertainty, but also with faith and hope. We believe God is not finished with Shawn’s story, and we are trusting Him step by step, even when the weight feels heavy. While we are taking things one day at a time and managing as best we can, the ongoing costs connected to Shawn’s recovery have stretched our resources beyond what we anticipated.

This season has also been difficult for Shawn in a different way. As someone who wants to provide and contribute, it has been hard for him to watch the practical responsibilities fall largely on me while his focus must remain on healing. He carries deep gratitude for the support we’ve received over the past year and a half, along with a quiet frustration that he cannot do more right now—but he remains gracious, hopeful, and committed to recovery so he can return to the life and responsibilities he loves.

Between extensive medical and surgical bills, transplant-related medications, and the cost of emergency Med-flight transportation (air medical services) as well as Nashville Emergency Medical Services (EMS), expenses have continued to accumulate beyond what insurance covers.

Like many families navigating serious illness, we are doing our best to stay afloat while focusing on what matters most—Shawn’s healing and recovery.
