My name is Shatavia Lawrence I’m 30 yrs old I was diagnosed with Lupus in 2010 I was (20 years old), technically known as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue in many parts of the body. There are a list of symptoms that vary between people and may be mild to severe. Common symptoms include painful and swollen joints, fever, chest pain, hair loss, mouth ulcers, swollen lymph nodes, feeling tired, and a red rash which is most commonly on the face. At the time I was experiencing more than half of those symptoms. In October 2012 I became pregnant which caused a lupus flare because women with lupus are automatically high risk. I was 5 months pregnant at the time & unfortunately ending up losing my baby boy. I was hospitalized for 2 1/2 months total, doctors believed when I passed the baby my health would get better but it didn’t. The pregnancy caused a lupus flare which caused the lupus to attack my kidneys & heart. I still suffer from complete kidney failure & congestive heart failure til this day. I’ve been on dialysis for 4 years now and it’s really overwhelming balancing my own business, working and paying my day to day bills...I’m on the Emory Kidney Transplant list I’m blood type O+...but I’m still on the waiting list so for the time being I have an upcoming surgery to take a different approach on another Dialysis catheter. Either way insurance doesn’t pay for the entire surgery if I get a kidney or the surgery for my catheter.
