Help Sharon Live Safely at Home With Her Daughter

Donation protected
This is for my dear friend Sharon, who would never ask for help, so I’m asking for her.

Sharon is strong, kind, fiercely independent and full of positivity. But right now, she urgently needs financial support to make her home safe and liveable as she recovers from a devastating injury and faces the ongoing challenges of living with muscular dystrophy.

Her story is not one she would ever want in the spotlight, but the truth is, she’s struggling.

A Life-Changing Diagnosis

About five years ago, while pregnant with her beautiful daughter, Sharon noticed an unusual weakness in her legs. Initially, she brushed it off, but the symptoms quickly worsened. She vividly recalls trying to run for the bus but was suddenly unable to. As her pregnancy progressed, so did her symptoms. After a long road to answers, she was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, a degenerative condition that affects the muscles and mobility.

Pregnancy had accelerated the progression of this cruel disease. Within a short time, she could no longer walk.

Adapting to a New Life

Her life changed overnight. Things most of us take for granted—getting out of bed, moving through the house, picking up our child—suddenly became impossible without help. Sharon and her partner, who has become her full-time carer, adapted as best they could. Their home isn’t set up for someone with a physical disability, but they made it work. Unfortunately, there's no government support available to her, as she has a small income protection policy that barely covers essentials.

Despite the daily challenges, Sharon has remained incredibly strong and focused on giving her daughter a beautiful life. She never complains and never asks for help. But now, things have taken a devastating turn.

A Traumatic Injury and a Long Recovery

Recently, Sharon experienced a terrible fall at home, which has become all too common in a house not designed for someone with her condition. This time, she broke her thigh bone. The trauma didn’t stop there; she had to wait two hours for an ambulance, and when it arrived, the paramedics struggled to find a vein, preventing her from receiving pain relief. Afterwards, she spent 24 hours in A&E waiting to see a doctor, only to be misdiagnosed.

48 hours later, she underwent surgery only to flatline on the operating table due to unexpected blood clots in her lungs. Fortunately, the doctors were able to resuscitate her. After spending a week in the ICU, she is now in the midst of a long and challenging recovery.

Her partner has had to give up work entirely to care for her and their daughter. Without him, she would likely be in full-time care. But even with him, their day-to-day life is incredibly hard.

Why We Need Your Help

Muscular dystrophy is progressive. Sharon’s needs will only grow. Right now, their home is unsafe and unfit for her condition, and without changes, it increases her risk of further injury.

We’re raising funds to:

  • Modify the home to make it safe and accessible (e.g., widen doorways, bathroom adjustments, and ramps)
  • Purchase essential mobility and care equipment
  • Help the family cover basic costs while Sharon recovers and her partner continues as her full-time carer

Any amount you can give will make a difference. Truly.

This is about helping someone who’s done everything she can to carry on quietly and with dignity. She never wanted to be in this position, but now that she is, she deserves the support and safety many of us often take for granted.

Please give what you can and share Sharon’s story to help us reach more people. Let’s help Sharon have a safer, more liveable home and the chance to focus on what matters most: her health and her daughter.

Thank you for listening to her story,
